If anyone has been trying to access the blog in the last half an hour and had problems, it was because I decided on the spur of the moment to upgrade (procrastination). Now all I have to do is reinstall my pretty template and plugins and stuff, and we’ll be off.
Update: Getting there…
Further update: I am banned from commenting on my own blog! Now what have I done? …OK, this is something up with the spaminator (slightly rejigged; and then rejigged to be tougher… apologies if you have any problems, and I’ve set it to send email notifications so I’ll know about it).
I knew this was a bad idea.
Final update (Saturday): No, it wasn’t a bad idea, for anyone feeling put off by my bad temper in the middle of the process. You just need to be patient. Also, if you use the amazing spam-eating Spaminator, it’s a good idea to make sure that you have the latest version to go with your shiny new WP. After all, it’s pretty easy to install!

I thought something mad might be occurring when weird test posts appeared in my rss!
If you need any advice from a recent-upgrader, drop me a line
I do want to know why that white border has appeared round sidebar headings, when I simply transferred the stylesheet without making any changes. Grnk.
And why are gravatars not showing? Grnk.
It’s beautiful the way that spam has mimicked discussion [he’s right, but I deleted them anyway - Sharon]. BUT SERIOUSLY…
The reason those white boxes have appeared is actually the same reason d.p. looked rubbish in IE: now the WordPress default php files make link categroy headings H2’s, when they weren’t before, o it’s applying your H2 style to the headings. In my case this meant huge right margin, in yours it’s meant borders. You basically have 3 options:
1 - If you’re not using H2 anywhere else, change H2 in style.css to look like normal text;
2 - Where you’re using H2 elsewhere, make it use something else, like H4, and copy the stylesheet from H2 > H4. THEN change H2 to be normal text;
3 - Figure out some way of stopping WP doing this by default (by far the trickiest option).
I’ll be offline for the next couple of hours but if you can’t get round the problem send me an email or something and I should be able to reply at some point.
I wondered, although I was confounded by the fact that it’s actually like a negative-image of the H2 style. OK, I can fix that. And I know why gravatars aren’t showing now, although I haven’t worked out how to do the editing in the new set up. It can wait a day or two.
I upgraded and I also have to logout from WP before I comment on my own blog. Talk about irritating.
Gravatars are a challenge; the wordpress ‘loop’ has moved a bit, I made them work through sheer trial and error. At least your comments field works.
I’m also always tempted to leave the genuinely wierd or funny spam on the comment fields. After all, a spam of beauty is a joy forever.
Glad you made the jump!
I probably will be too once the spam issue is fixed and the formatting quibbles sorted. There are these nice new things to play with!
At first I thought the WP news on the Dashboard would annoy me, but the Technorati integration is just sublime. Ooh, and I just found this plugin, “Dashboard Options” to let you configure it! (Although the install looks fiddly)
OK, gravatars up, comments reformatted. (NB: 1. your old wp-commments php file probably won’t work; 2. if you don’t put a comments.php in your own theme folder it just uses the one in the default theme. Once I got that bit of information it was easy to take it and adapt it to what I wanted. Well, almost, once I also got past a few “id” v “class” issues.)
What I’d really like to do with the sidebar is format it so *all* of the headings take H2. I like the white (pink?) box; I’m just aesthetically affronted by the inconsistencies. And I’m wondering if there’s any point at all to the calendar or shall I just get rid of it. Does anybody ever use it?
Um. Hmm. Should I upgrade? Now you’re scaring me. Though it looks good now, I comment on my own blog a lot and don’t want to lose that.
I never use the calendar on any blog. Category and monthly archives, yes.
wa, it looks as though I simply need to upgrade my version of spaminator itself to fix that problem. Now we’ll see whether this gets through…
It really hasn’t been that bad, it was just little things making me grumpy. It took a bit of getting used to the new Themes setup. BUT you might not want to try it just yet anyway, because the new WP Codex - which is absolutely invaluable, not to say essential, for the upgrade - seems to have vanished. My link in the sidebar is currently getting a 404, and the link at the WP site just redirects to their mainpage. This is really, really irritating. I hope it’s just temporary.
I think I’m going to dump the calendar.
PS: the Codex is back up.
