Pissing off brats. Ha.

Two and a half years, I wrote a quick post pointing to a debate somewhere else on the web about the ‘long’ 18th century: How long is a century?

Now, from time to time this draws stroppy comments from (I presume) kids who have, apparently seriously, asked Google the same question. I usually keep them in the moderation folder for a while for some private entertainment. But let’s share.

this is no help I need to know if a centuary is 100 or 10 years long!!!!!!!!!!! Tell me the answer on this website!!!!!

THis suck’s I can’t find how long a century is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sencerly (I hate you) [name]

It really does piss ‘em off that I didn’t do their homework for them, doesn’t it?

Whereas if they simply went to a dictionary or dictionary website and looked up the term, they’d have the answer in a flash!

Though it makes me very depressed to realize that there are students out there, of whatever age, who are Google-capable and yet don’t know the difference between a century and a decade.

Terry Pratchett has observed that five exclamation mark is a sure sign of an unhinged mind.

Oh, come on; you’re making this up. Everyone knows a century is 1000 years.

Everybody knows what an ordinary century is. That’s not what they’re asking.

Kids, if you’re still reading this, a “long” century is either 13 or 14 years, or 17 if you’re using Clark’s revised edition. Hope that helps.

You tease Wilson. A long century isn’t a length of time. It’s a duck. It’s classed as a long Century if its wingspan is more than 12″ (30cm). Technically it should be called a ‘wide century’ but that’s academics for you. The typical wingspan of a Century is 11″, and from its tail to its bill tends to be around 10″. I couldn’t find a photo of a Century duck, but I did find one of its eggs. http://www.flickr.com/photos/fotoosvanrobin/2211245068/ Yumsk!!!!!!!!!!!!
