Thinking about plugins

I have one or two WP plugins that I downloaded and haven’t got round to installing. One is the Recent Comments plugin, which I rather like the idea of. The thing is - well two things, really. I had a vague idea of making this blog a 3-column affair, so that things like Recent posts, Recent comments etc would go down one side and links to blogs and so on down the other. Except that I read the WP support forums and it looked a really, really difficult thing to set up properly. So it didn’t happen and probably ain’t gonna neither. Secondly, do I get enough comments to make it worthwhile? I’m really really jealous of bloggers who get lots of feedback. (Sulk.) But, then, maybe I would actually get more if it was easy to see and respond to commenters?

So should I install it (and perhaps add recent posts while I’m about it)? And are there any other cool and EASY to install WP plugins anyone could recommend?

By the way, All Day Permanent Red has the cutest cat photo. Ahhh…

  1. Thanks! She’s an adorable kittie. (Check out the photoblog category for more pics of her and the other kitties.)(And, yeah, I think it would be a good idea to put up the recent comments (you get more comments that way.) But I wouldn’t use any of the plug-ins. Instead, you should probably use the “my comments” hack (it’s called a hack because it goes into your myhacks.php file.) I’ll go check to see if you left your email address at my site (as I’m sure you know, in WP blogs, only the owner of the blog can see email addresses.) I’ll send you the instructions, and if you have any questions, feel free to email back, or we could IM.

On, there is another nice shot of buffy here. And more if you look at the photoblogging category. I’m using WP 1.3 alpha, BTW, which has atomatic paging. (You won’t see the whole category at once – you have to use the Next Page links at the bottom of the page.)

Another things that are nice, if you want more comments – a live comment preview, like the one I use, and the plug-in that lets people subscribe to comments by email. (Though that is not really such a pressing thing, since people can already just subscribe to the comment RSS.)

  3. Ahem. Will have a go with this recent comments hack and see what happens. (Perhaps I won’t say thanks until it’s up and working… If this runs into big trouble, all I can say is take care of Evil Duck, because I’ll be coming to get ya both.)

  4. Hey, look, it works! Thanks, Harrison. Between your code and the WP wiki, I got it first time - which, for me, is pretty amazing. And yeah, that live preview gizmo is kinda cool. Go on, let’s have some of that too!

  5. Hey, great to see you have it up and running! I’ll find my files on the live preview thing and walk you through it, if you need me to. (Bascially, you have to understand where to listen to Javacript events and how to call a javacript function in a php plugin…which just means that you have to wrap the function call in a php call.)

  6. And, oh, WolfAngel originally sent me that code. I stripped her name from it just because it’s standard practice in forwarding third-party emails that have not been authorized.

  7. Thanks. Javascript, uh? Oh, well, it’s about time I started learning these things. You may need to be very patient…

It’ll probably take me a day or two to get around to it now anyway.
