Of sailors, shipwrecks, encounters
Two interesting items in yesterday’s Guardian.
There’s a report on the archaeological investigation on the Swan, a Cromwellian ship that went down off the Scottish coast in 1653, and one of its sailors, ‘Seaman Swan’, in particular.
Pankaj Mishra writes a fine essay about encounters and relations between ‘East’ and ‘West’ to mark the new exhibition at the V&A, Encounters: the meeting of Asia and Europe 1500-1800, from 21 September to 5 December (guess what’s just gone straight to the top of my ‘to do in London’ list?). The V&A ‘mini site’ is well worth a visit, with a quiz and e-postcards, as well as a good list of educational resources.
