To the WP experts
With some of these picture-heavy posts, I’d like to use the ‘excerpt’ function. (Yes, I have something with a lot more pictures coming up…). At least I think that’s the tag I want. I gave it a try, and seemed to get the whole post plus excerpt, for all posts, on the index page (didn’t stop to look at individual pages!). Not what I was after. But reading the support forums for more detailed advice, I just got rather confused. I need someone to explain to me in simple terms - or point me to an online tutorial for dummies where I can get this information - what I do to have an excerpt on the main page only when I want one; if I leave the excerpt box blank, it’ll be just a normal post. If that’s possible.
Can anyone help please?

Sharon: All you need to do is use the ‘more’ button on your write screen. So type whatever in the Excerpt box. Then hit the more button and start typing in the post box. When you hit the more button, it will add to the top of your entry. Once published, everything under that tag will NOT be on your index file but readers can click thru to it.

Thanks, sepoy. Well, almost there anyway. The ‘more’ works (why didn’t I spot that? Eejit)… but it doesn’t show the excerpt on the index page. I think there must be a piece of code I need to add to the index.php?

While we’re on the topic, I should point out that your RSS feed isn’t working for me. I finally got around to updating my bloglines, and it seems that your feed has a 404 error.
Just thought I’d let you know.

And bloody hell. sepoy, I’ve tried the excerpt tag again as on that page and it still gives the same result, ie displays both post and excerpt on the index page. Does it need some extra parameters? I’m going back to the support forums, so maybe I can work it out, but any advice still appreciated…

Jeez, am I a plonker or what. I don’t need to fanny about with the excerpt box or tags. I just start to type the post in the main box and then hit ‘more’ when I’m ready.
No, it wasn’t obvious to *me*, OK? (If I’d come to WP from MT instead of Blogger, I’d probably know this…) I suppose I’d quite like to work out how to change the wording from ‘more’ to something a bit more interesting. But that can wait; I’m not likely to be using this very often anyway.
Greg: I don’t know precisely why the RSS feed isn’t working or (as yet) how to fix it, but I think it has something mysterious to do with .htaccess and ch_mod rewrites… And if anyone can explain it all to me, I’ll love you forever. I know I have a working atom feed and will stick that in the sidebar asap.
